Distress Ink Effect with Copic Markers

Hi everyone! It's Sandie here and today I am sharing a card I made. The card features one of Magnolia's Tilda stamps and is coloured with copic markers to replicate a distress ink colouring.

First I always start with the skin, and my usual combinations is 

E000, E00, E11, E04. I use E20 and E22 for the cheeks. 

When colouring as distress inks I leave the middle of the face very lightly coloured. 

Complete all the skin, using E04 to add dark shadows. 

On the hair I used E50 and E53, and the darkest shadows are E33

The white pants is coloured using N1 and N3, and only as shading. I dab the grey with colourless blender to smooth it out. 

My pinks are R81 and R83. Again, I use colourless blender to smooth the colour out into the white areas, and then add some C5 to make shadows. 

I do the same with the boots, only I add the grey first, and then layer down the pink. 

Again, using the colourless blender to smooth

Once you have all of the image coloured, take the C5 and add deeper shadows as desired.

Which one is your favorite

 When I started with Copic I thought it was hard to choose which colour of W, T, N, and C to start with. So today I will show the same motif and what the difference actually is in the pens. But I have not showed N since I do not have it myself, but it is most similar to T, I would say. For those of you who may already have some of them maybe I can inspire to start collecting on any of the others.

In a small area it can be hard to see what colour suits you best. The differences can be seen obviously much more on larger surfaces, so I have chosen to use a subject with a reindeer where the body is the biggest surface.

I have also stamped with black ink pad in two subjects and the third subject I chose to use a brown pad.

All designs I coloured with Distress Technique, which is not so much colour and then dark on the edges and then brighter and brighter toward the center. Hope you understand what I mean ....

Here I have used the brown ink pad and reindeer are coloured with W in different shades.

W is a warm color that goes well with the Browns.

Reindeer : W0,1,3,5,7    Nose: R00,30  Horn:100

Bag: E81,84,87

Green: YG91,93,95,97

Flower: E02,08,09

This motifs is stamped in black ink pad and coloured with C which is a very cool shade of black.

Reineer: C0,1,3,5,7  Nose:R00,3  Horn:100

Bag: E41.42,44,47

Pink: RV10,63,66,69

Green: G40,82,85

This motif is also stamped with black ink pad and coloured with T which is my favourite when I'm colouring black.

Reineer:T0,1,3,6,8    Nose:R00,30     Horn: 100

Bag: E21,23,25,27,29

Green: BG90,93,96,99

Flower: E02,08,09

For some time I had the Activator in my house, but never used it, today I will bring it in action. I can tell you it is a fabulous product, the Copic alcohol is in a spray bottle, that sprays an even layer of alcohol. The spray head prevents evaporation.

Ich hatte den Activator nun für einige Zeit zu Hause, habe ihn aber noch nie benutzt. Heute kommt er zum Einsatz. Es ist ein fabelhaftes Produkt. In der Sprühflasche befindet sich Copic Alkohol, der durch die Flasche gleichmäßig aufgetragen wird. Und der besondere Sprühkopf verhindert, dass der Alkohol verfliegt.

I took a digi from Make it Crafty, we will make a wall behind her and in the ice waffle we will bring some structure.  

We need a mask of the digi, you can use masking paper or tape for that, I have used my airbrush to create an even background layer. It is also possible to make the background by colouring with the markers.

Ich habe ein Digi von Make it Crafty benutzt und werde dahinter eine Wand setzen sowie der Eiswaffel etwas Struktur geben.

Für das Motiv benötigt Ihr eine Maskierung. Hierfür könnt Ihr Papier oder Klebeband benutzen. Ich habe mein Airbrush verwendet, um einen gleichmäßigen Hintergrund zu erhalten. Es ist natürlich auch möglich, den Hintergrund mit Markern zu gestalten. 

Place the mask over the image and a piece of paper on the place were the wall will end.  

Spray the wall with your airbrush in E33.

Legt die Maskierung auf das Motiv und einen Streifen Papier auf die Höhe, in der die Wand enden soll. Sprüht die Wand mit Airbrush und E33.

Take a stamp of a wall, this is an older stamp of Magnolia. (It is still available.) 

Spray an even layer of alcohol on your stamp and place directly on the paper,  let it stay for some second. Take the stamp of.

Nehmt dann einen Wand-Stempel. Dieser ist ein älterer Stempel von Magnolia (er ist immer noch erhältlich).

Sprüht eine gleichmäßige Schicht Alkohol auf den Stempel und platziert ihn dann direkt auf dem Papier. Laßt ihn für ein paar Sekunden liegen und nehmt den Stempel dann weg. 

There is a wall now, the Activator pushes the color away, like the blender does.

Nun ist eine Wand entstanden. Der Aktivator drückt die Farbe fort, so wie es auch der Blender tut.

Place the paper on the other edge, so you can spray the bottom.

Legt den Papierstreifen nun auf die andere Seite der Linie, so dass Ihr den Boden sprühen könnt.

I thought it needed something extra, therefore I put an other magnolia stamp over it.

Ich dachte, da fehlt noch was und habe darum einen anderen Magnolia Stempel als Boden gestempelt.

If you remove the mask and the paper, you will see this. Now I think the waffle is pretty big, without structure, so we are gone make a structure in it.

Wenn Ihr die Maskierung und den Papierstreifen entfernt, werdet Ihr dies sehen. 

Nun finde ich, dass die Waffel ziemlich groß und strukturlos ist. Also geben wir ihr etwas Struktur. 

Colour the waffles in the colours you prefer, I choose E42, 41 en 40. 

Make a mask were you have cutted out the waffles, see the picture above.

Coloriert die Waffel in den Farben, die Euch am besten gefallen. Ich habe E42, E41 und E40 benutzt.

Macht dann eine Maskierung, in der Ihr die Waffel ausgeschnitten habt (siehe Bild oben). 

Place the mask on your digi and a on one of the waffles.

Legt die Maskierung über das Motiv und auf eine der Waffeln.

The stamp with the dotted patron seems suitable to me, colour the stamp with E44. Spray some Activator on the coloured stamp and place it on the waffle.

Der Stempel mit dem blasenähnlichen Motiv scheint mir für die Waffel zu passen. Ich habe das Motiv mit E44 coloriert. Sprüht dann etwas Activator auf den eingefärbten Stempel und legt ihn auf die Waffel.

The Activator does what  name says, he activates the Copic ink.

Der Activator tut das, was sein Name sagt: er aktiviert die Copic Tinte.

Change the waffles and repeat the procedure.

Tauscht dann die Waffel-Maskierungen aus und wiederholt den letzten Schritt.

This is the image after the operation, now you can colour the lovely girl and her ice cream.

To clean teh stamp, spry it with the Activator and clean it with a towel.

So sieht das Motiv dann aus. Nun könnt Ihr das süße Mädchen und ihr Eis colorieren. 

Um den Stempel zu reinigen, sprüht wieder etwas Activator auf und säubert den Stempel mit einem Tuch. 

Use this technique also on other parts of your images, a dress, a hat or a animal skin. 

Using only the activator it gives you a white impression, using a copic colour you get a coloured lines.

Diese Technik könnt Ihr natürlich auch auf anderen Bereichen Eurer Motive verwenden - einem Kleid, einem Hut oder Haut eines Tieres.

Wenn Ihr nur den Activator verwendet, dann erhaltet Ihr einen weißen Stempelabdruck, mit Copic-Farbe erhaltet Ihr farbige Linien.

 as I have mentioned several times on this and on my other blogs, I love the images of Saturated Canary (Krista Smith is the designer). The hair, big eyes and layered clothing, they ask to be coloured with Copics. I made some cards for the show in Frankfurt, this was one of them. I think this is is such a girly girl with her bucket full of kisses (her doggie) 

Wie ich schon mehrmals auf diesem und auf meinen anderen Blogs erwähnt habe, liebe ich die Motive von Saturated Canary (die Designerin ist Krista Smith). Diese Haare, die großen Augen und die vielschichtige Kleidung bitten doch gerade zu darum, mit Copics koloriert zu werden. Ich habe ein paar Karten für die Messe in Frankfurt gemacht, das ist eine davon. Ich finde, das Motiv ist so ein typisches Mädchen mir ihrem "Bucket full of Kisses" (Eimer voller Küsse) - ihrem kleinen Hund.

The colouring is matched with the Pion Papers, they have grey and old purple in them. Of course we have the matching colours in our Copic Range. 

I created an easel card, always a great design for demonstration!  Under the girl I stippled  some soil with a confetti technique, this technique is also used around the image, but in lighter colours.

Die Koloration ist auf die Pion Papiere abgestimmt, sie enthalten Grau und gedecktes Lila. Natürlich bietet die Copic Farbpalette die passenden Farben.

Ich habe eine Easel-Card gemacht, das ist eine großartige Kartenform für Vorführungen. Den Boden unter dem Mädchen habe ich in der Konfetti-Technik getupft. Diese Technik habe ich auch um das Motiv herum angewendet, aber in helleren Farben.

To dress up my card, I used different dies from Memory Box, Marianne Design and Magnolia. Some lace, flowers and text completed the design.

Um meine Karte zu verzieren, habe ich verschiedene Schablonen von Memorybox, Marianne Design und Magnolia verwendet. Ein Stück Spitze, ein paar Blumen und ein Text runden das Design ab.

What are Copic Markers made of?

Woraus sind Copic Marker gemacht?

Copic markers are alcohol (ethanol) based dye markers, that are known for being low-odor and giving smooth, vibrant colors. Since they are a dye, they will fade in bright lights, but they are acid free on most surfaces. Anything with alcohol in it will react with these inks. They will not cause paper to pill when going over it many times (like water based markers do), nor will they dissolve photocopies.

Copic Marker sind auf Alkoholbasis hergestellt und bekannt dafür, geruchsarm zu sein und eine brilliante Farbqualität zu liefern. Da es sich einen Farbstoff handelt verblassen sie in grellem Licht, aber sie sind auf den meisten Materialien säurefrei. Alles, das Alkohol enthält, wird mit diesen Farben reagieren. This dye is permanent on many surfaces, making it a great choice for mixed-media. Paper crafters can color there embellishment with it.

All Copic Markers have the same ink. A B24 in Ciao is the same color as a B24 in Sketch. These are computer-mixed inks. They have not changed in more than 25 some years, and they never will change. If you have a marker that's 15 yrs. old and you go to refill it, it will be the exact same color.

Alle Copic Marker enthalten die selbe Tinte Ein B24-Ciao-Marker enthält exakt denselben Farbton wie ein B24-Sketch-Marker. Die Farben werden computergesteuert gemischt. Are they harming the environment?

Copic markers are environmentally friendly, because they are refillable, with replaceable tips. Refill ink bottles are made of recyclable plastic , tips mare made of felt and will biodegrade. Markers are filled with Ethanol (ethyl alcohol), a form of alcohol that can be manufactured from plants or synthesized. No animal products of any kind are used in either Copic markers or inking pens.

What is the difference between the different marker types?

Copic Markers come in 4 different body styles. Most people work with the main three, Copic Original, Sketch, or Ciao. Wide markers are fun for backgrounds and special effects . Most paper crafters are using Sketch or Ciao. Scrappers like the firm tip of the Copic Original for journaling or doodling. The difference is the content of the ink, the Copic holds the most ink let us say 200%, the Sketch holds 150% and the Ciao 100%. There is also a difference in the form of the marker body, Copic Original is a square marker, the Sketch has an oval body and the Ciao is round. At the cap of the Copic and the Sketch the color number is indicated.

Copic Marker kommen in 4 verschiedenen Formen. Die meisten Leute aribeten mit den drei Arten Copic Original, Sketch und Ciao. Es gibt auch noch breite Marker (Wide Marker), die toll für Hintergründe und spezielle Effekte sind. Die meisten Bastler arbeiten mit Sketch oder Ciao Markern. Scrapbooker mögen die harte Spitze der Copic Original Marker fürs Journaling oder Doodling. Der Unterschied ist die enthaltene Tintenmenge. a. Do I color a lot or a little? If you only color every now and then and you just want a high quality marker for those rare occasions, think Ciao. If you will be coloring all the time, pick Copic Original or Sketch (these will last longer before needing to be refilled

a. Coloriere ich viel oder nur ein wenig? Wenn Du nur hin und wieder colorierst und dafür qualitativ hochwertige Marker verwenden möchtest, dann sind Ciao die ideal Wahl. Wenn Du ständig colorierst, solltest Du Copic Original oder Sketch Marker wählen. Sie halten länger bevor sie aufgefüllt werden müssen.

b. Do I have to have every color exactly perfect, or is close good enough? If you need EXACT colors think Sketch, since it has the most colors, 346. Copic Original has 216 ,but both Copic and Sketch have empty markers so you could always fill your own colors and make custom as well. If you're not too picky, go with Ciao, since they have "only" 180 colors and no empties.

b. Muss jede Farbe perfekt die Farben Deines Projekts treffen, oder reicht ein ähnlicher Farbton? Wenn alles genau passen muss, dann sind Sketch Marker ideal, denn davon gibt es mit 346 Farbtönen die meisten. Copic Original Marker gibt es in 216 Farbtönen, aber sowohl davon als auch von Sketch Markern gibt es Leermarker, die nach Wunsch befüllt werden können und sogar zum Mischen eigener Farben verwendet werden können. Wenn farblich nicht alles so perfekt sein muss, dann sind Ciao eine gute Wahl - davon gibt es "nur" 180 Farben und keine Leermarker.

c. Do I like a firm tip to color with or do I want the really flexible brush? The Copic Original comes standard with a nice firm, fine point for coloring. If you know you like the flexible brush then go for the Sketch or Ciao.

d. Do want to airbrush and how much will you use the airbrush? All three markers are suitable for airbrushing (the Ciao needs a little adjustment). The Copic Original gives you fastest covering of the surface. Using the Ciao you need to refill sooner than when using the Copic Original or Sketch. With Ciao and Sketch you can get two different Airbrush styles

d. Möchtest Du airbrushen und wie oft wirst Du es nutzen? Alle drei Marker-Arten sind zum Airbrushen geeignet (Ciao-Marker benötigen nur eine kleine Modifikation). e. How much will I spend on a marker? Ciao is the lowest in price, but need to be refilled sooner. Sketch and Copic Original are a little more expensive, but hold more ink and have caps with numbers. You can refill a Ciao 15 times and the Copic Original and Sketch up to 10 times with 1 refill bottle.

e. Wieviel willst Du für Deine Marker ausgeben? Ciao sind preislich am günstigsten, müssen aber schneller nachgefüllt werden. Sketch und Copics Original sind etwas teurer, enthalten aber mehr Farbe und haben auf die Kappen gedruckte Nummern.
