Tutorial: Paper Piecing

 Today it is time again  to share a tutorial with you. It's me, Diana, , who has the honour to do so. I have been inspired to make this tutorial by the dear Nicole (Nicolchen), who has shown several beautiful creations with paper piecing lately. That's why I decided to make this tutorial about "Paper Piecing".

Heute ist es wieder an der Zeit euch ein Tutorial zuzeigen. Diesmal habe ich, Diana, die Ehre. Als Inspiration für dieses Tutorial diente mir die liebe Nicole (Nicolchen),. Sie hat in letzter Zeit so schöne Werke mit Paper Piecing gezeigt. Deshalb habe ich mich also für das Tutorial zum "Paper Piecing" entschieden. 

So let's get statred!
At first a little explanation as to what paper piecing is about. Simply said, it means to colour stamped images using design paper.

Also fangen wir an!

Als erstes eine kleine Erklärung was das Paper Piecing bedeutet. Ganz einfach heißt es, das wir mit Desginpapier Stempelabdrück "kolorieren".

Step 1
First you choose a suitable image. I decided to use the sweet Tilda with a flowerpot from Magnolia. The coat is very suitable for paper piecing, because we have a larger area to show off the design paper.

1. Schritt:

Als erstes sucht ihr euch ein geeignetes Motiv aus. Ich habe mich hier für die süße Tilda mit dem Blumentopf  von Magnolia entschieden. Hier eignet sich der Mantel sehr gut für das "Paper Piecing", da wir hier eine größere Fläche haben und so das Designpapier toll zur Geltung kommt.

 Step 2
Now you stamp the same image a second time, but this time onto the design paper that you have chosen. I decided to use the same design paper that I will be using on the layering of the card. It is from Maja Design's collection "Life in the Country". You don't have to stamp precisely because we only need the piece for the coat;0)

2. Schritt:

Nun stempelt ihr das selbe Motiv noch einmal ab. Aber diesmal auf das Designpapier, was ihr euch für den Mantel ausgesucht hab. Ich habe mir hier Designpapier ausgesucht, was ich auch später auf meiner Karte verwenden möchte. Es ist von Maja Design aus der Kollektion "Life in the Country". Ihr müsst hier nicht genaus stempeln, da ihr ja so wie so nur den Mantel braucht. ;0)

Step 3

Now you colour the image except the coat. This is where we will glue on the paper piece.

3. Schritt:

Nun koloriert ihr euer Motiv soweit fertig. Lasst aber den Bereich für den Mantel frei. Hier kleben wir gleich das kolorierte Designpapier auf.

Step 4
Now you colour the designpaper. First I cut out the pieces for the coat, but if you want to colour first and than cut out, that is possible, too.
I made two colour examples for you. For the first one I used warm greytones for the shading. On the second I used colours matching the colour of the design paper. For my card, I chose the version with the W-Markers. But as you see, you can play around and try several ways.

4. Schritt.

Nun wird das Designpapier koloriert. Ich schneide mir die Stücke für den Mantel als erstes aus. Wer aber lieber erst kolorieren und dann ausschneiden möchte, kann das natürlich auch so machen.

Hier habe ich mal zwei Farbbeispiele für euch gemacht. Bei dem ersten habe ich zum schattieren die warmen Grautöne genommen. Und bei dem zweiten habe ich mir zum Designpapier farblich passende Copics ausgesucht und damit die Schattierungen koloriert. Für meine Karte habe ich mir die Version mit den W-Tönen ausgesucht. Und damit geht es nun auch weiter. Aber so könnt ihr sehen, das man nicht nur mit Grau schattieren kann. Probiert es selber einmal auch und experimentier ein bissen herum.

Step 5
Here you can see the coloured and cut out coat. Now we glue it onto the coloured image.

5. Schritt:

Hier seht ihr meinen fertig kolorierten und ausgeschnittenen Mantel. Diesen kleben wir nun auf unser soweit fertig koloriertes Motiv auf.

Now Tilda is coloured and dressed completely *g*

Und schon ist die Tilda fertig koloriert und angezogen. *g*

And that's it!
I found this technque interesting and it adds the certain "it" to the image.

Tutorial on 3D paper piecing Copic colored images

Here Mariska from The Netherlands again. Today I wanted to show you how I 3D paper piece the images I color with my Copic Markers. What you'll need to try this is:

Hier ist wieder Mariska aus den Niederlanden. Heute möchte ich euch zeigen, wie ich die Motive, die ich mit meinen Copics coloriert habe, in 3D zusammensetze. Um das zu versuchen, braucht ihr Folgendes:

* Digi image Angie by Wee Stamps (in March to be released as a rubber stamp by Whimsy Stamps) or any other stamp or digi
* Paper to stamp or print on (I use Paper Temptress Iridescent Cryogen White)
* Copic Markers (of course :))
* Precision scissors and/or craft knife
* Memento Dual Tip Marker Tuxedo Black
* Pergamano embossing tools and mat
* White gelpen (mine is from a Dutch store named the Hema)
* Olba Glue kit with syringes
* Pair of tweezers

* Digi image Angie von Wee Stamps (wird im März als Gmmistempel von Whimsy Stamps veröffentlicht) oder einen anderen Stempel oder Digi
* Papier, um das Motiv abzustempeln oder auszudrucken (Ich verwende Iridescent Cryogen White von Paper Temptress)
* Copic Markers (selbstverständlich:))
* Präzisionsschere und/oder Cuttermesser
* Memento Dual Tip Marker Tuxedo Black
* Pergamano Embossing-Werkzeug und Matte
* Weißer  Gelstift (meiner ist von einer niederländischen Firma namens the Hema)
* Olba Klebe-Set mit Spritze
* Pinzette

First I print or stamp the image several times. In this case I printed the image six times. Five of the images have been printed very close to each other, the sixth image has enough space around it so I can cut this in the shape I want to at the end. Next step is coloring with Copic Markers.
Zuerst drucke oder stempele ich das Motiv mehrere Male. In diesem Fall habe ich das Motiv sechsmal ausgedruckt. Fünf der Abbildungen liegen sehr nah beieinander, die sechste hat genug Platz  um sich herum, so dass ich es zum Schluss in die Form schneiden kann, die ich möchte. Der nächste Schritt ist die Coloration mit Copic Markern.

Instead of coloring the entire image in one printed image I color every single piece apart from each other. I can use several parts of one image but I am careful that two colored parts of the image don't touch each other and have enough space between them to let me cut them out later. In the picture above you can see for instance that I have colored the face of sweet Angie in one image and the neck, that is connected to the face, in a second one. I use the image that I have given a bit more space then the others (the image on the right bottom) as a base image. In this image I color the background and the pieces that are way at the back, in this case the right wing for instance. I decided to do a polka dotted background on this image.
Ich coloriere nicht bei allen Abbildungen das ganze Motiv, sondern in jeder Abbildung coloriere ich einzelne Teile getrennt von einander. Ich kann dabei zwar mehrere Teile aus einer Abbildung verwenden, muss aber darauf achten, dass die einander nicht berühren und dass genug Platz dazwischen ist, damit ich sie später ausschneiden kann. Auf dem oberen Foto seht ihr zum Beispiel, dass ich das Gesicht der süßen Angie in der einen Abbildung coloriert habe, ihren Hals, der mit dem Gesicht verbunden ist, aber in einer anderen. Ich verwende die Abbildung, der ich etwas mehr Platz gegeben habe (die unten rechts), als Basis. Bei dieser Abbildung coloriere ich den Hintergrund und die Teile, die am weistesten hinten sind, in diesem Fall z.B. der rechte Flügel. Ich habe entschieden, einen gepunkteten Hintergrund um das Motiv zu machen.  

I am now going to decide from every little piece I’ve colored what adjoining piece is going to be the base for another piece. For instance, in the matter of the face, the hair adjoining the face is going to be a higher layer then the face, so the hair next to the face that I’ve colored is going to serve as a base for that. I am now coloring part of all these adjoining base pieces with my W5 Copic Marker. I do this because when the image is finished you are not only going to be looking at it from straight above. When you don’t color the base pieces in a dark color you will see a lot of white when you don’t look at the paper pieced image from straight above and I personally don’t like that. I also color almost the complete image of the base image because most of this is of course going to serve as a base for the pieces later on.

Nun muss ich für jedes einzelne kleine Teil, das ich coloriert habe, entscheiden, welches anschließende Teil die Basis für das nächste Teil darstellt. Zum Beispiel beim Gesicht muss das daran anschließende Haar auf einer höheren Schicht liegen, als das Gesicht selber. Das Haar neben dem colorierten Gesicht dient somit als Basis dafür. Ich coloriere jetzt alle anschließenden Basisteile mit Copic Marker W5. Ich tue das, weil man das fertige Bild nicht nur genau von oben ansehen wird. Wenn man diese Teile nicht in einer dunklen Farbe coloriert, würde viel Weiß zu sehen sein, wenn man nicht ganz genau von oben daraufschaut und ich persönlich mag das nicht. Ich coloriere auch fast das komplette Basis-Bild auf diese Weise, da es ja als Basis für die folgenden Teile dient.

Next is the cutting. I cut every piece I have colored WITH attached the adjoining W5 colored base parts.
Das Ausschneiden kommt als nächstes. Ich schneide alle Teile, die ich coloriert habe, MIT den anschließenden in W5 colorierten Basisteilen aus. 

Here you see the cut pieces I have already cut from the two bottom images stacked on the base image. As you can see I still need to cut the pieces from the images at the top of the sheet at this point. Stacking like this lets me see if I have cut and colored every part... and it's just fun to see the image built like this :).

Hier seht ihr die ausgeschnittenen Teile, die ich bereits aus den zwei unteren Abbildungen ausgeschnitten und auf die Basis-Abbildung aufgelegt habe. Wie ihr sehen könnt, muss ich noch die Teile aus den oberen Abbildungen ausschneiden. Sie so "aufzustapeln" hilft mir zu sehen, ob ich alle Teile richtig ausgeschnitten und coloriert habe...und es macht Spaß zu sehen, wie sich das Bild aufbaut :).

Next step is I take my dual tip memento marker and with the large side of this marker I color the sides of all the pieces I have just cut. The reason is the same as why I colored all the base parts with W5, when you look at the image from the side and the sides of the cut parts aren't colored you are going to see white sides, I find that the completed images looks MUCH better with the sides colored. Diny asked me why I don't use a Copic marker to do this, reason is that the side of the paper is going to absorb the ink from the Copic marker quicker and you will end up with black ink in your image. You will have to work fast with the Memento marker as well though.
Im nächten Schritt nehme ich meinen  Dual Tip Memento Marker und coloriere mit der großen Spitze die Seiten aller Teile, die ich gerade ausgeschnitten habe. Der Grund hierfür ist der gleiche, warum ich auch die Basis-Teile mit W5 coloriere, wenn man das Motiv von der Seite anschaut und die Seiten der ausgeschnittenen Teile sind nicht coloriert, dann sieht man diese weißen Schnittkanten und ich finde, das fertige Motiv sieht VIEL besser aus, wenn die Schnittkanten coloriert sind. Diny hat mích gefragt, warum ich dafür keinen Copic Marker verwende, der Grund ist, dass die Schnittkanten die Farbe viel schneller aufsaugen und man dann schwarze Farbe in das Motiv bekommt. Auch mit dem Memento Marker muss man schon schnell arbeiten.

Almost ready to paper piece but first I emboss the little pieces. I take the Pergamano embossing tools and mat. I put the image on the mat with the colored side facing down, and with the ball of the embossing tool I push down a little and go round in circles. The images should be slightly rounded on the colored side when you are ready. Don't press to hard though.
Kurz bevor ich die Teile zusammenfüge, embosse ich die kleinen Teile. Ich nehme das Pergamo Embossing-Werzeug und die Matte. Ich platziere das Motiv mit der colorierten Seite nach unten, drücke es mit dem Embossing-Werkzeug etwas an und fahre in kleinen Kreisen darüber. Die Teile sollten leicht gewölbt sein, wenn ihr damit fertig seid. Drückt nicht zu doll auf.

Here you see all the colored, cut, side colored and embossed pieces together with the base. Before you start putting the image together (the next step) you want to cut the image in the shape you want it. Once finished you won't be able to put your image in a cutting machine. I also ink the edges of the image in this stage.
Hier seht ihr alle colorierten, auch am Rand eingefärbten und embossten Teile zusammen mit der Basis. Bevor ihr im nächsten Schritt das Motiv zusammensetzt, solltet ihr das Motiv in die Form schneiden, die ihr möchtet. Ihr werdet das fertige Motiv nicht mehr in eine Schneidemaschine bekommen. An dieser Stelle färbe ich auch die Ränder des Motivs ein. 

Next step is paper piecing. I fill the syringe of my Olba Glue and carefully decide which part of the image is going to be the most in the back of the image. I decide where the glue should go, put on a bit of the glue and...
Im nächsten Schritt wird es zusammengesetzt. Ich fülle die Spritze mir Olba Glue Kleber und wähle aus, welches Teil des Motivs am weitesten hinten liegt. Ich entscheide, wo der Kleber hinmuss, trage etwas Kleber auf und...

... using my tweezers put the colored piece on top of the glue. I put the piece in the glue making sure the glue supports the piece of paper but I don't press down on it, I don't want to flatten the image but I want it to be layered. The glue is very strong once set and will hold the piece perfectly in place.

...und platziere das colorierte Stückchen Papier mit der Pinzette oben auf den Kleber drauf. Ich  lege es so auf den Kleber, dass sicher ist, das überall Kleber drunter ist, der das Teil stützt, aber ich drücke es nicht an. Ich möchte das Bild Schicht für Schicht aufbauen, nicht flachdrücken. Der Kleber ist sehr stark, wenn er getrocknet ist und wird das Teil perfekt an seinem Platz halten.

And here is my finished image, I have added Stickles, glossy accents and highlights with my white gelpen.
Und hier ist mein fertiges Moriv. Ich ahbe Stickles, Glossy Accent und Lichtreflexe mit meinem weißen Gelstift hinzugefügt.

I have created a baby box with the image. I'll replace the name and date of birth when I have a baby to give this gift box to but for now the box is made for cute little Angie, the name of the stamp.
Ich habe eine Baby-Box mit dem Motiv gemacht. Ich werde den Namen und das Geburtsdatum einsetzen, sobald es ein Baby gibt, dem ich das schenken werde, bis dahin ist diese Box für Angie, das ist der Name des Stempels.

I hope you like my tutorial and will give it a try. I know it looks very time consuming, and it is, but the end result, I think, is very pretty and really brings the image to life.
Ich hoffe, euch gefällt mein Tutorial und ihr werdet es auch einmal versuchen. Ich weiß, es sieht sehr zeitaufwändig aus, das ist es auch, aber das Endergebnis ist meiner Meinung nach sehr hübsch und es macht das Motiv wirklich lebendig.

A Birthday Wish with Lili of the Valley

This is going to be my first post for the Copic Marker Europe blog and I couldn't be more excited (and slightly nervous). I really hope you like what I made for you today with the pretty Little Dot "Birthday Wish" by Lili of the Valley stamps:

Das ist mein erster Beitrag für den Copic Marker Europe Blog und ich könnte nicht aufgeregter sein (und leicht nervös). Ich hoffe wirklich, dass ihr mögt, was ich heute mit dem süßen Motiv Little Dot 'Birthday Wish' von Lili of the Valley  für euch gemacht habe:

Isn't she absolutely adorable in her gorgeous blue dress and her pretty stickled up golden wings. Because of the card design (a Double Dutch Fold) I had a little difficulty taking a picture of the total card. Here is a close up of the top of the card so you can see the Copic colored image better:
Ist sie nicht absolut bezaubernd in ihrem niedlichen blauen Kleid und ihren hübschen goldenen Flügeln, auf denen Stickles aufgetragen wurden. Aufgrund der Kartenform (eine  Double Dutch Fold) hatte ich Probleme, ein Foto von der ganzen Karte zu machen. Hier ist eine Nahaufnahme des oberen Teils der Karte, damit ihr das mit Copics colorierte Motiv besser sehen könnt.

Hope you didn't fall of your chair :). My favorite thing about the Copic Markers is that they blend so beautifully and I love to blend until I have exactly the shade I had in mind. I first color the wings with E81 and then go over the tip of my E87 marker with my E81 marker to get a shade between those two, then I blend again. Since the new release will bring us more E8. colors this will not be necessary in the future. The giftwrap was colored with just a small amount of B91 very well blended with my Colorless Blender. I love this heavenly blue shade.
Ich hoffe, ihr seid nicht vom Stuhl gefallen :). Ich liebe an den Copic Markern ganz besonders, dass man so schöne Farbschattierungen damit erstellen kann und ich liebe es, solange daran zu arbeiten, bis ich genau die Schattierung erreicht habe, die ich mir vorgestellt habe. Ich habe die Flügel zuerst mit E81 coloriert und habe dann mit die Spitze meines E81 Farbe von E87 aufgenommen um einen Farbton zwischen diesen beiden zu erreichen, dann habe ich die Übergänge verwischt. Das wird zukünftig wohl nicht mehr nötig sein, da bei den neuen Farben weitere E8er dabei sein werden. Das Geschenkpapier habe ich mit ganz wenig B91 und ganz viel Colorless Blender coloriert. Ich liebe dieses Himmelblau.

Since I used a lot of color in the image I decided to keep the papers very basic so just one sheet of Magnolia Design Paper and white cardstock. Some embossing, some pretty white flowers and a gorgeous golden ribbon and that's it. The sentiment comes with the stamp and the only things that I added there were some Papermania Shimmer Dots.
Da ich beim Motiv viele Farben verwendet habe, habe ich beschlossen, die Papiere sehr einfach zu halten, nur ein Blatt Magnolia Design Paper und weißer Cardstock. Ein bisschen Embossing, ein paar hübsche weiße Blumen und ein niedliches goldenes Band, das war's. Der Spruchstempel gehört zu diesem Motiv und das einzige, das ich noch hinzugefügt habe, waren einige Papermania Shimmer Dots.
When you don't know my blog you may not know that I usually paper piece my images in 3D. Here is a side view of my card so you can see the depth and also the model of the card better:
Wenn ihr meinen Blog noch nicht kennt, dann wisst ihr auch noch nicht, dass ich meine Motive meist in 3D aufbaue. Hier ist eine  seitlichere Ansicht meiner Karte auf der ihr sowohl die Tiefe als auch die Kartenform besser sehen könnt.

On my personal blog I always share the little pieces that the image was made of. Since this is my first post here I thought I'd show them as well.
Auf meinem persönlichen Blog zeige ich auch immer die kleinen Teile, aus denen das Motiv zusammengesetzt ist. Da das hier mein erster Beitrag ist, möchte ich das hier auch zeigen.

Copics and Paper Piecing tutorial

hallo liebe Copic-Freunde.

Today I have a little tutorial for you how to use your Copics to make your paper piece images pop out even more by adding shades and deepth to the paper pieced areas.

Heute habe ich ein Tutorial für Euch in dem ich Euch zeigen möchte, wie Ihr Eure Motive mit Paper Piecing noch mehr hervorheben könnt, indem Ihr Schatten und somit Tiefe in die "ge-paper-piecten" (oh, ich fürchte, dieses Wort habe ich gerade erfunden LOL) Bereiche bringt.

First stamp your image once that kind of cardstock you usually use, i. e. the Perfect Colouring Paper by Copic. In addition you also need to stamp the image on each of the patterend papers you want to use.

Zuerst stempelt Ihr das Motiv auf den Cardstock, den Ihr üblicherweise zum Colorieren eurer Motive verwendet, z. B. das Perfect Colouring Paper von Copic.

Zusätzlich müßt Ihr das Motiv auch auf jedes der Motivpapiere stempeln, das Ihr verwenden möchtet.

Now pick one of the images stamped on patterned paper to add some shading. As you can see here did I try several different markers to find the color I think that matches best or gives the result I want to have. Also make sure to try the Copics on the patterned paper regarding blending and colors since the colors will look different than they do on white paper and also act different while coloring since each paper is different. It may be softer or harder than your normal cardstock and so colors may flow out the lines easier or not blend as easy as you're used to. 

The good thing with Paper Piecing is that it isn't a big thing if your paint flows out of the stamped lines since you will cut the pieces out later.

Nehmt nun eines der Motive, das Ihr auf Motivpapier gestempelt habt, um hier Schatten hinzuzfügen. Wie Ihr auf dem Bild sehen könnt habe ich verschiedene Marker auf dem Papier ausprobiert umd die Farben zu finden die am besten mit dem Papier übereinstimmen oder auch das Ergebnis liefern, das ich haben möchte. 

Ihr solltet die Copics auch unbedingt auf einem kleinen Rest-Stückchen des Motivpapieres ausprobieren da die Farben auf den bunten Papieren anders aussehen werden als auf weißem Papier. Außerdem können sie sich beim Colorieren anders verhalten. Jedes Papier ist anders, es gibt harte und weiche Papiere, und je nachdem könnte die Markerfarbe leichter aus den gestempelten Linien fließen oder auch nicht so gut ineinander übergehen als Ihr es gewohnt seid.

Das Gute am Paper Piecing ist, daß es nicht schlimm ist, falls Farbe über die Stempellinien hinausfließt da die einzelnen Teile später ausgeschnitten werden.

After some testing I decided to with W-tones for this paper. I started with W5 and added some color to the areas I want to be the darkest.

Nach einigem Rumprobieren habe ich mich entschlossen, für dieses Papier W-Töne zu benutzen. Ich habe mit W5 begonnen und etwas davon auf die Bereiche aufgetragen, die später am dunkelsten sein sollen.

Then I went on with W3...

Dann habe ich mit W3 weitergemacht....

...and then used W1 for the lightest area and to blend the colors together. 

Make sure you do not cover the whole patterned paper with your Copics, you still want to see the original color and the Copics are only used to add some shading.

...und habe dann W1 für die hellsten Stellen und zum vermischen der Farben verwendet.

Tragt nicht auf dem gesamten Motivpapier Farbe auf - die Originalfarbe soll immer noch zu sehen sein und mit den Copics wollt Ihr nur Schatten setzen.

Then I used the W5 again to add some more shading to the darkes areas.

Anschließend habe ich nochmal W5 verwendet um etwas mehr Schatten im dunkelsten Bereich hinzuzufügen.

Repeat these steps with all your patterned papers. Don't forget the color testing on each of them!

Wiederholt diese Schritte auf allen Euren Motivpapieren. Vergeßt nicht, auf jedem die Farben auszuprobieren!

For the greyish blue paper I used C5, C3 and C1 for the shading and added a little bit of B91 to it.

Auf dem grau-blauen Papier habe ich C5, C3 und C1 zum Schattieren verwendet und ein klein wenig B91 mit dazugegeben.

Here I used C7, C5, C3 and C1.

As the next step color the image you stamped on white cardstock. You only need to color the areas that won't cover with patterned paper.

Für den nächsten Schritt nehmt Ihr das Motiv, das Ihr auf weißen Cardstock gestempelt habt, und coloriert es. Hierbei müßt Ihr die Bereiche, die anschließend mit Motivpapier beklebt werden, natürlich nicht colorieren.

Now cut out the areas of your patterned paper that you added the shading to before and glue it on the image that was stamped on white cardstock, working in layers.

Schneidet nun die zuvor auf dem Motivpapier schattierten Bereiche aus und klebt Sie auf das Motiv auf weißem Cardstock. Arbeitet in Lagen, beginnend mit der untersten.

And here ist your beautifully paper pieced image.

I added some snow liner by Rayher to the tree, ground and fur on the scarf and hat and covered the snowy areas with glitter that was added to the wet snow liner.

Ich habe etwas Snowliner von Rayher auf den Boden, den Baum sowie die Bommel an Mütze und Schal aufgetragen und anschließend die eingeschneiten Stellen zusätzlich mit Glitzer überzogen, den ich über den feuchten Schneeliner gestreut habe.
